Apple is on the third revision of it's hugely popular touch-screen device, and yet, to this day I still can't find a justifiable reason to purchase one.
As a bit of background, I love electronics, and this is what I currently spend my time with on a daily basis (in varying percentage):
-iMac
-MacBook Air
-Kindle (I can't read ebooks on a backlit screen)
-iPhone
-Apple TV
-PlayStation 3
Those are the core pieces of electronics I use, typically in conjunction with one another, but, even today, I can't find a fit for the iPad.
At first I thought it would be great to just lounge around and use it to read some websites on the couch, but my MacBook Air basically fixes that issue. As a test of this, I had a Motorola Xoom and an iPad 2 I used for over a month to see if I could really find a genuine feel for why I might find some practical use out of tablet devices, and came away empty handed.
So, I come to you, the deviantART community, to give me some ideas and insight as to what you use your iPad for?

But.... That will depend, on what you really need from iPad.
I send messages to friends and family who also have an ipad or iPhone on iOS 5 with iMessage, and I can say you myself that the experience is truly amazing.
Usually when I woke up, and I wanted to search for something on the Internet or just wanted to check DA.
I had to put my laptop one which took me about 5 minutes till I was able to normally get on the Internet.
With my new iPad make that 5 seconds. Or maybe a minute if it was fully turned off.
It truly is an amazing device, and I have no regrets buying it
Then you get a smartphone, and you can't live without it. I think it might be much the same here.
I think it's just a way to tell people: "I sh*t money, see!?"
Because you have an Apple TV, I also find using it as a remote (versus my iPhone) is much more intuitive when it comes to playing/viewing my movie/music collection. You can easily view your entire catalog (the thumbnails) on a large screen and easily pick the movie/album with minimal scrolling. This in itself isn't reason enough to justify but again, its a more enjoyable experience imo.
And lastly, if you ever wish to annotate PDFs it can become a very useful tool - again, its not a unique function (can also be done on your air) but its a more enjoyable experience.
If your waiting for a tablet that might completely replace one of your current devices, I think you'll need to wait a couple more years. I am a tech nut myself, and the only compelling thing that would make me get an Android tablet over an iPad is the native Gmail. Other than that, the complete polish of iOS and the app catalog are unbeatable. And if your on the fence at all, I think the Retina display alone can swing you - and thats from an iPad2 owner, who was sure there was nothing about the new iPad that could compel me to upgrade.
Finally, if you want to take the wait & see approach, I'd say come back to your tablet decision once Windows 8 comes out. The UI looks stunning and the early preview looks closer to a laptop replacement than any iOS/Android offering considering it will have a full computer OS at its base. Of course, poor hardware could destroy all its good mojo but I think there will be some offerings from Samsung, HP, etc that will at least be comparable to the iPad (not the display, though I wish).
Hope all this helps, good luck with your decision going forward!
